Ballroom One captivated fans of basketball and comedy with their merengue performance at the Harlem Globetrotters game Feb. 22 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre. During a break from the Globetrotters’ antics, the six-child competition dance team performed to an engaged and energetic crowd.

Some nerves quickly gave way to a performance by the group ranging in age from 7 to 12.

“I was pretty excited,” recalled Julissa Barra, of Luzerne — a sentiment shared by the entire team.

Michael Jordan, of Waverly, a longtime fan and patron of the Harlem Globetrotters, was a “bit shocked to be able to perform for one of my favorite teams.”

McKinlee Bell, of Scranton, said “I felt like I was dancing on rainbows.”

The dance team members include Julissa Barra, of Luzerne; McKinlee Bell, of Scranton; Ava Castellanos, of Abington; Abigail Hribal, of West Pittston; Michael Jordan, of Waverly; and Brady Turlip, of Eynon. Ballroom One was founded in 2012 by Shauna Baldino-Turlip. The studio is located in Archbald, Pennsylvania. Ballroom One offers lessons on a variety of dances from ballroom to ballet. Students of all ages are welcome.
