Even in the middle of the pandemic with most of the school year being virtual, Abington Heights art students created fine pieces of art. This year’s fourth annual Our Town Student Art Show was held virtually on March 28 and the student art was showcased. The art show was begun five years ago by Shirley Wagner Eagen and Dorothy O’Connor. Both want to encourage young artists to continue their interest in the arts.
Entries this year included:
Senior photography entries
Jolene Morais for “Fall,” Abigail Brock for “Comfort in Love,” Matthew Nzasi for “The Passions of Africa,” and Reilly Brown “Windows to the Soul.”
Senior painting entry
Brooke Sorensen for “Summertime Happiness”
Senior drawing entries
Sabriya Seid for “Eating Candy” and Kayla Przekop for “Equality Runs Deep”
Senior mixed media entry
Zoe Epstein for Beaded Jewelry
Junior Photography
Julian Cornog for “Slomo”
Junior Drawing
Kyle Munley for “Natalie Weaver”
Because of the current situation , there were a limited number of entries so judging was not possible in most categories. Each junior who submitted an entry will be awarded $50 and each senior who submitted art will be awarded $100. In addition, seniors who submitted an essay about their art were eligible for the $500 scholarship. Sabriya Seid was the winner of that award.
This annual art show is made possible by combined efforts of The Gathering Place, Abington Heights Civic League, Clarks Summit Borough, Bob and Regina Bennett, and Abington Business and Professional Association along with donations from Highland Associates, PNC Bank, Gretchen and Matthew Mackie, and an anonymous donor. Abington Heights teachers who were key in arranging for the exhibit are Eileen Healey, Tim Butler and Abby Fenton.
The video of the art and the video of the awards ceremony are both available on The Gathering Place website (www.gatheringplacecs.org), on the link through The Gathering Place weekly email, on Facebook (The Gathering Place and Abington Civic League sites ) and Youtube.
