Filling a hole: Toastee Bagels brings new dining option to the Abingtons

S. ABINGTON TWP. — Abington area residents will soon have a new breakfast and lunch option.

Toastee Bagels, 621 Northern Boulevard, Chinchilla, held a soft opening on July 30 and will open with regular hours this month.

The new eatery will serve Jersey-style boiled-and-baked bagels made fresh daily, with 16 regular flavors plus seasonal varieties. Butter, peanut butter and jelly and avocado spread are just a few of the accompaniments, as well as many flavors of cream cheese.

Owner Neil Patel said the size of the bagels also lends them well to using them for breakfast sandwiches like bacon and egg, egg and cheese and Patel’s favorite, Taylor ham, known locally as pork roll. Toastee Bagels will also have lunch options of cold and hot sandwiches featuring Boar’s Head products, as well as catering options.

Since no bagel could be complete without a coffee on the side, the shop also plans to offer fresh-brewed hot coffee along with cappuccinos, lattes and iced coffees, and bottled refrigerated drinks like soda and juices.

Patel has a lot of experience working with bagels, starting with his work at the famous Goldberg’s Original Bagels. He originally hails from New Jersey, but his wife, Stephanie, grew up in the Millville-Bloomsburg area.

“After years of traveling and working in the corporate world, she said, ‘I’m moving back. Are you coming with me?” Patel said, chuckling.

The Patels then made their home in Mountain Top, where he opened Bloomin’ Bagels with a partner. That location will convert to the Toastee Bagel brand later this year.

Toastee Bagels’ flagship store on Route 315 in Plains Township opened in January, and Patel said he has plans to open more across the region. The second location will be at the long-vacant site where the former Rainbow Market stood decades ago, across from South Abington Elementary Center. Unlike the Plains Township location, the new Toastee Bagels will have a drive thru, as well as plenty of parking and seating inside.

“I want it to be a place where people can gather, relax and have their breakfast or lunch,” Patel said.

“We are excited to welcome a new business to South Abington Township,” Township Manager JoAnn Pane said about Toastee Bagel’s pending opening. “The continued growth and investment in our community is encouraging and reinforces that we are moving in the right direction. We look forward to seeing this new business thrive and contribute to the vitality of our township.”

Patel said he hopes to open a third location later this year or early in 2027 in the Back Mountain area. He added, however, that he wants to focus on the quality of the product rather than expanding quickly. That’s also why he wanted to focus on opening locations in Northeast Pennsylvania.

“We make everything from scratch every day,” he said. “I’d rather stay close and keep my eye on the quality of the product.”

That quality extends to the atmosphere of the eatery.

“I wanted a mom-and-pop feel with corporate standards,” he said.

He also wanted to provide job creation for the area. The South Abington location held a job fair on July 23-24, during which he was able to hire about 20 local people.

“Some of them are high school students, which is great,” Patel said. “This is a great first job to have, and they will learn a lot.”

If the success of the first location is any indication, people of the Abingtons have a lot to look forward to. The Plains Township store has a 4.4 on Google reviews out of 76 reviews.

On Yelp, Toastee Bagels has a 5 star rating out of 12 reviews.

“Holy moly! This is exactly what this area needed,” one Yelp review by username Julie S. read. “Their breakfast sandwiches are insanely good!”

Another review by username RZ S. recommended everything on the menu. “Coffee is great too,” that reviewer added.

Toastee Bagels will be open seven days a week with the exception of New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“That’s family time,” Patel said. “I want my employees to be able to spend that time with their loved ones.”

The eatery will be open from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily.

“I think this new business is a perfect fit within our business district and will become a fan favorite for all of South Abington Township residents and all Abington area residents,” Chairman Mark Dougherty of the township’s board of supervisors said. “I wish them well to succeed and grow in our community.”
