NICHOLSON — St. Patrick’s Parish Hall will host a giant book sale on the eve of Earth Day (Saturday, April 21). Although the theme will be “Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle,” Earth Day is not the only cause this event benefits. It will be to raise money for My Brother’s Keeper Quilting Group, aka The Sleeping bag Project. Proceeds will be used to purchase gas for vans to deliver sleeping bags all over northeast PA and New York.

“People will be able to see a DVD about how to make an emergency sleeping bag, see a volunteer sewing pieces of recycled fabric together to make a 7 X 7 foot square, help tie knots to make a sleeping bag, purchase lunch, buy used books, and donate items for the project,” said volunteer and church member Joan Kupetsky.

In honor of Earth Day, there will be a large selection of gardening and craft books as well as fiction and non-fiction. Prices of the books will range from $0.50 to $2. There will also be raffle baskets with gifts, including an afghan made by Janice Ring and a Basket of Beauty made by a volunteer. Germana’s Pizza, located on Main Street, will help raise funds by making pizza and hoagies for the parish to sell at the event.

“All the proceeds from the day are to help the Sleeping Bag Project,” said Kupetsky. “Flo Wheatley (who began My Brother’s Keeper Quilting Group) delivered the first sleeping bag in 1982, and this project operates totally with volunteers. All donations are sorted, bagged, and organized by the Wednesday Crew and health kits are made to place in each sleeping bag.”
