CLARKS SUMMIT — As soon as Jaime Senofonte, 27, of Waverly, learned she and her husband Alec Senofonte were about to have a girl, she began browsing area shops for little clothes and other baby items. But she soon found herself turning to the Internet, unable to find what she was looking for locally.
She is now making sure other new and expecting mothers in the Abingtons won’t have that same problem.
Birdie, her new modern baby boutique, located at 120 S. State St., offers clothing for boys and girls up to 4, baby shoes, wooden toys, bibs, bamboo dinnerware sets, backpacks, bath toys, blankets, teethers, pacifier clips, headbands and more. About 75 percent of the clothing is organic, and many of the items are handmade and eco-friendly.
“I pretty much offer everything,” said the new mother.
Her daughter Everly, now 7 months old, was the inspiration behind the shop’s title. Senofonte said before the baby was born, she nicknamed her “pretty bird” and still affectionately refers to her by that name. When she and her husband were trying to decide what to call the business, they started kicking around ideas that had to do with birds.
“We said, ‘Birdie,’ and it made me think of her,” she said.
Formerly employed as a hair stylist for eight years, Senofonte said opening up a shop like Birdie was always that “one thing” she thought she would like to do if she were to change careers. Now, with that dream becoming reality, she looks forward to the freedom owning her own business will bring, and the ability to come home for dinner and put her daughter to bed every night.
The business owner said she got some tips from her husband’s aunt, Kathee Senofonte, who owned the former children’s clothing store Giggles for about 15 years in the building that now houses Talbots in Clarks Summit. While that store offered a larger selection of sizes, however, she said Birdie specializes mostly in baby clothes – although she may expand to include larger sizes in the future.
Birdie’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday. The business can be found on social media websites Facebook and Instagram by searching “Birdie Baby and Tot” or reached by phone at 570-319-9765.
