CLARKS SUMMIT — Joseph Hitchcock, of Madison Twp., rode off with a Pennsylvania State Championship title for his class at the USA BMX State Championship race in Pittsburgh on Aug. 25.

Hitchcock, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at North Pocono Middle School, took third place for his age bracket in the Intermediate class. Hitchcock trains regularly at Cedar BMX in Newton-Ransom and competed in four qualifier races across Pennsylvania before claiming his State Champion title.

Cedar BMX, one of northeast PA’s only BMX tracks, has been in operation for over 30 years and is part of USA BMX, the nation’s largest BMX organization. Each week, riders of all ages and abilities from across northeast PA compete in BMX races.

BMX racing, otherwise known as bicycle motocross, is a type of off-road bicycle races held on single-lap race tracks and has been an Olympic sport since 2008. The tracks are groomed, serpentine-style dirt tracks made of various jumps and rollers.
