CLARKS SUMMIT — Abington Heights High School seniors Daniel Cummins and Dominick DeSeta were recently announced as semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship.

The National Merit Scholarship is based on a student’s score on the PSAT (Practice SAT) during their junior year of high school. There are only 10,000 semifinalists across the nation with about 2,000 of them receiving the scholarship.

Andrew Snyder, principal of Abington Heights High School, said, “Both Dan and Dom are the type of students we look for, with their academics and leadership, and they are both inspirations for other students.”

Snyder also said both students are extremely gifted and both invest hard work and time back into the school and community.

Cummins holds leadership positions in Mock Trial, Russian Club and Interact Club. He is also involved in the Newspaper Club, Robotics, National Honor Society, Russian Honor Society, and established his own club, the Tutoring Corps.

Cummins created the Tutoring Corps in hopes that students will seek help if they are having trouble with a certain subject(s). He has helped countless students through this program, and has even developed a website to make it easier for students to get help.

DeSeta is involved in Robotics, Programming Team, Software Club and holds the position of National Honor Society Secretary. He is very involved in the Software Club, where he spends most of his time following the organization’s main goal of collaborating with others and designing software. He enjoys this because it allows him the ability to communicate and to combine his individual knowledge on a larger scale, while working alongside other people.

Finalists for the National Merit Scholarship will be announced within the coming months.
