WAVERLY — Volunteers at the Waverly Comm’s gymnasium started everyone’s day with a hearty breakfast Saturday morning, a meal that gave children the energy they needed to do the activities that Breakfast with the Bunny and Easter Egg Hunt had to offer.

Children played games such as Easter tic-tac-toe. They shot a ball into a flower pot. They also made arts and crafts, including bunny ears to wear on their heads.

Just like the Comm’s Valentine’s Day party, high school students from Abington Heights, Our Lady of Peace, and Lackawanna Trail volunteered to help with the activities. Abington Heights senior Mashka Sutton showed children how to decorate paper bags with designs such as stickers and glitter.

“I think it’s a pretty good turnout,” she said. “It’s nice to have the community together. If some people don’t know each other, they could now.”

The games and activities put the kids in the Easter spirit for a meet and greet with the Easter bunny. Children lined up at the gym’s auditorium to sit on the bench with him as their parents took photos. Shannon Gula, who teaches the Comm’s after-school program called COMM Kids, escorted kids up the stairs to see the bunny, marking the first time she volunteer at the event.

“It was a nice experience seeing the kids get dressed up and seeing the Easter bunny,” she said.

And dressed up, they were. Three-year-old Caitlyn Walega and her 17-month-old sister Clare wore matching flowery dresses and bunny-ear head bands.

“I love coming to the holiday events here,” said their mother Dawn.

Dawn, her husband, and their daughters come from Carbondale Twp. to attend the Comm’s events such as this one and the Valentine’s Day party. Caitlyn and Clare also take music classes, taught by Cheryl Mozdian, at the Comm.

The kids then participated in the Easter egg hunt held in the Comm’s Madison Room and the board room. Children brought their own baskets to fill with eggs. After taking prizes out of their eggs, the children placed the empty shells in a large bin to recycle them for next year.

“The Easter egg hunt was the best,” said 4-year-old Eva Jackson, of Clarks Summit, who looked for eggs with her 2-year-old sister Clara.
