It is never too early to expose children to the wonders of nature. The Dietrich Theater is so fortunate to be able to bring in Rebecca Lesko and volunteers from the Endless Mountains Nature Center to do just that.
Last week the preschool set in Little People and Nature class were introduced to an eastern screech owl and a kestrel, live birds that are now at the Endless Mountains Nature Center because they are injured and cannot survive in the wild. The little owl lost an eye because it flew into a moving car. Now it is used for education purposes, like coming to the Dietrich to meet our youngest learners. Thank you, Overlook Estate Foundation, for your support of this program.
Sometimes it seems the governor and his cabinet are far away in Harrisburg and out of sight. Governor Tom Wolf and his cabinet are bringing a new initiative to outlying communities, called Cabinet in Your Community. Our Executive Director Erica Rogler, when asked if the cabinet could come to the Dietrich Theater on Monday, April 16 at 10:45 a.m., feels it is a wonderful opportunity for our community to meet members of the cabinet and talk about the issues important to you and our region. All are invited.
The guest panelists will be Dennis M. Davin, Secretary of Community and Economic Development; Richard Flinn, Director of Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency; Teresa D. Miller, Acting Secretary pf the Department of Human Services; and Teresa Osborne, Secretary of Aging. All of those who serve us – right here in Tunkhannock. And you are invited!
A few choice tickets are still available for the Spring Film Festival Opening Night Gala if you call 570-996-1500. Two movies – “I, Tonya” and “Molly’s Game,” hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer, and dessert between the movies – all for $40 a person. When we get the reservations, we so often hear exclamations like, “I went last year and loved it” or “My friend told me how much fun it is and now I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” It is a night of fun and good food and drink and also a way to meet new friends.
Now for the movies in the Spring Film Festival, April 13 through May 3, that are on my must-see list. I will see “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” simply because it stars Annette Benning, one of my favorite actors. It is the story of Gloria Graham, film star of the 1940s and 1950s, her romance with a younger man, and their encounter with events beyond their control. Sounds so compelling.
I absolutely will not miss “Itzhak,” the documentary about violist Itzhak Perlman. A polio survivor, he fought to attain his place as one of the world’s greatest violinists. I once had the opportunity to see him perform in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A stranger to my left handed me his binoculars so I would be able to see the expressions on his face while he played. I will never forget how his facial expressions express the depth of his passion for the music he plays.
