“We belong to the earth. The earth does not belong to us,” was the message to come away with at the special presentation last week by the Endless Mountains Heritage Region featuring Rivers of Our Region.

This presentation on the North Branch of the Susquehanna River and the showing of WVIA’s “Looking to the River” concluded with the thoughts and conclusions of those who know the river so well: Donald Williams, Susquehanna River advocate and environmentalist; Richard Fitzsimmons, founding member of the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership and member of the River 444 Club: Dr. Gere Reisenger, Native American historian; and Emily Rinaldi, Endless Mountains Heritage Region’s Water Trail Coordinator/Manager.

Beautiful river photos showing sojourns on the Susquehanna, tales of Native American history along the river, and stories of what it is like to actually live along the river completed the morning’s presentation. Richard Fitzsimmons talked about the ever-changing moods of the river, moods that are reflected by rain, snow, wind, humidity, and temperature. Above all, says Richard, the river is vibrant, unlike lakes and ponds. Thank you to the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, WVIA, and all the featured advocates for bringing this special program to the community.

Another reminder about an upcoming event. Last week I wrote about our special Madison String Quartet Mother’s Day Concert on Sunday, May 12 at 3 p.m. All children are admitted free. Admission for adults is free with a suggested donation of $10. This will be the third year in a row this energetic and inventive group will perform at the Dietrich on Mother’s Day, this year beginning with a musical journey for the young and the young at heart for the first half of the program. The second half of the concert will feature a more traditional format, including music of Bedrich Smetana and Arturo Marquez. Tickets are available at the door, but you can reserve them at 570-996-1500.

Announcing another special event. A Joni Mitchell musical celebration is coming to the Dietrich Theater screen. It is the Music Center Presents production of “Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration” on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. You are invited to join her peers and friends who pay tribute to her by singing her songs: Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan, Diana Krall, Kris Kristofferson, James Taylor, Seal, Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile and more. All honor Joni Mitchell with renditions of her songs. Not only is this a celebration of her music, but it also includes behind-the-scenes interviews with her fellow musicians and friends. Tickets are available online at www.dietrichtheater.com or at the ticket booth. For information, call 570-996-1500.

Registration has begun for summer camps and classes. Check them out online or call to have a brochure mailed to you. The Dietrich Theater has programs and events for all ages just waiting for you.
