The Art of Making Do, presented by Dietrich Theater quilting instructors Ingrid Rogler and Terry Keller, inspired the sharing of memories of quilting as a community experience. They demonstrated how nothing was wasted. A threadbare quilt was often covered by a new quilt top. All kinds of fabrics were salvaged for quilts. That was the art of “making do,” an art that most of us have lost today.

The social aspect of quilting was also emphasized, with several women getting together to complete one quilt. And, as women worked together to quilt, some remembered that, underneath the raised quilt frame, children found a perfect place to play while the stitching and conversations made the time fly by.

Thank you Ingrid and Terry and all your fellow quilters who shared so many memories. A very fitting presentation for Tunkhannock’s Hometown Fall Fest celebration.

It was the very next day that classical guitarist Jay Steveskey enriched our minds and spirits with his selection of classical pieces, along with a few more popular selections. When Jay performs, you can see and feel how the music becomes an extension of him, showing his true mastery. We are so grateful that this concert could be free, thanks to Dietrich Board President John Keker, in memory of Jessie Reppy Keker.

Another very special opportunity is coming up, thanks to the support of the Everhart Museum and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation. We are thrilled that Peg McDade, nationally known fiber artist, is coming to the Dietrich to offer “Everhart Connects: Stitching It All Together,” a trip through fibers, fabric, and stitches to explore your experiences and memories of home, locale and place.

The free series of 11 sessions on Fridays, Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22, Dec. 6, 13, 20, and Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., for those 55 and over, will provide all the materials for each participant to create an individual fiber artwork. A wide variety of textiles, yarns, canvas, and hand tools will be available. All levels of experience are welcome. Call the Dietrich to enroll for this series at 570-996-1500.

All Aboard! A Railroad Photography Presentation, sponsored by the Dietrich and the Kitson Arts Alliance, brings Oren B. Helbok and Kenny Ganz to the Dietrich on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. Oren and Kenny have a combined experience of over 90 years photographing the railroad scene. Oren inherited his father’s love of photographing the world of railroading. He will show both his work and his father’s photographs. Kenny combined his love of photography and railroads as the official photographer of the National Park Service Steamtown National Historic Site for the fast 30 years. Together, they will share their experiences in this free presentation. All are welcome.

Two very special programs, both free, are inviting you to come to the Dietrich. Four movie theaters invite you to see the latest films, including “Downton Abbey” and “Judy.” Two studios, the Sheldon Art Studio Fassett Performance Studio, and Children’s Room invite you to come to art classes, Open Mic, Writer’s Group, quilting and Yoga and Nia classes and so much more. You are always welcome at the Dietrich.
