SCRANTON – The throwing events in general – and the Schirg siblings in particular – accounted for much of the Lackawanna Trail scoring during the District 2 Class 2A Track and Field Championships May 17 and 18 at Memorial Stadium.

Cole Schirg finished third in the discus with a throw of 127-8. Older brother R.J. Schirg produced the other points for the Lions with a sixth-place finish in the shot put and seventh in the discus.

The top six finishers in each event earned district medals while the top eight scored team points.

Lackawanna Trail had 11 points to place 14th out of 19 boys teams.

The Lady Lions fared slightly better, placing 13th with 17 points.

Ella Axtell led the way, taking third in the shot put with 32-6¾. Mackenzie Schirg was sixth in the same event.

Sophia Kazmierczak scored in three events. She earned a medal by placing fifth in the 300 hurdles in 50.64 seconds and added seventh-place finishes in the 100 hurdles and triple jump.

The Wyoming Area boys and Montrose girls won team championships.
