Country Club of Scranton pro Mike Molino qualified for his first major when he made it into the field of the U.S. Senior Open with his effort in a qualifier at the Indiana (Pa.) Country Club May 18.
Molino will be part of the field June 23-26 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem.
After shooting 3-under-par, 68, Molino still needed to get through a three-way playoff.
U.S. OPEN LOCAL
Abington Heights graduate and local club pro Anthony Sebastianelli made it through to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open.
Sebastianelli was the medalist of local qualifying for the second straight year, shooting 67 at Glen Oak Country Club May 16, matching the score he shot at Elmhurst Country Club a year ago.
Scranton amateur David Mecca also advanced with a 70 along with Christopher Crawford, a pro from Bensalem who shot 71.
North Pocono High School senior and Penn State recruit Billy Pabst Jr. and Clarks Summit’s Luke Fayocavitz earned alternate spots after shooting 73s.
There were 51 players for the three available spots.
KORN FERRY TOUR
After missing three straight cuts to begin May, Country Club of Scranton member Brandon Matthews shot opening and closing 66s May 26-29 in the NV5 Invitational presented by Old National Bank.
A strong start to the season has Matthews still in sixth on the Korn Ferry Tour season points list, needing a top 25 finish to make the PGA Tour next year.
During the month, Matthews also made his second career start on the PGA Tour on a sponsor’s exemption, but missed the cut.
