Abington Heights is going through a transition at the top of its athletic department as the 2022-23 school year approaches.
Former Marywood University men’s basketball coach Enrico Mastroianni was approved at the July 20 school board meeting as a replacement for Randy Hanyon.
Mastroianni will take over the position Aug. 23 and Hanyon, after 10 years as athletic director, will move to his new position as Dean of Students at the Middle School.
“It’s a good move for me at this point in my career,” Mastroianni said. “I’ll be in the district where my kids go to school.”
Mastroianni and his wife Jamie live in Clarks Summit with their daughters Angelina and Elena and their son Marco.
Although he said he loves coaching and will miss it, Mastroianni said the change is good for his family.
“There were weeks when I would not see them three nights in a row by the time I got in from coaching,” Mastroianni said.
At Abington Heights, Mastroianni will be responsible for a large and successful athletic program. On the varsity level, the Comets have boys and girls teams in basketball, cross country, golf, track and field, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball, plus boys teams in baseball, football and wrestling and girls teams in field hockey and softball and competitive spirit.
Mastroianni, a West Scranton graduate, began his college coaching career as an assistant at Misericordia University. He served as head coach at two New Jersey Schools, Centennary University and Georgian Court University, where the launched the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II University, before coming to Marywood.
At Marywood, Mastroianni was named Atlantic East Conference Coach of the Year in 2018-19 after leading the Pacers to their second straight winning season and a school-record 17 wins. His teams went 59-98 in seven seasons.
