Former Abington Heights and Keystone College standout Shelby Morgan has been named to lead the Lackawanna College women’s volleyball program back to full speed this fall.
Morgan’s hiring was announced by the college Aug. 1.
Lackawanna sat out the 2020 season because of COVID and played a shortened season in its return last season because of limited numbers in the program.
Morgan, who previously had a successful run coaching the sport at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, came to Lackawanna last fall as an Athletic Academic Advisor.
“I am thrilled to extend my role at Lackawanna College and be a part of the Athletic Department,” Morgan said. “I believe in the LC mission and what it offers its students. These student-athletes have the ability to compete at the next level, while receiving the attention they deserve in the classroom.”
Morgan took over a Cedar Crest team that was 3-22 the year before her arrival and turned it into a perennial conference title contender. She led the team to 20 wins, the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament championship, the first in school history, and a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Tournament appearance in 2021.
Cedar Crest had five straight winning seasons, going 75-31 after the team was 11-32 in her first two seasons of the rebuilding project. She took the team to the 2019 ECAC Tournament and was named CSAC Coach of the Year three times.
“I am excited to have Shelby here as head women’s volleyball coach,” Lackawanna director of athletics Erik Larson said. “She brings a great deal of collegiate experience to our team, both as a player and a coach.
“Shelby has the proven ability to transform a program to be successful.”
Morgan ranks in the top 10 in several statistical categories at Keystone where she is second in career kills. She was a three-year captain and a three-time honorable mention on the All-CSAC team.
“I am excited to dive in with the team and build a competitive culture,” Morgan said. “There are a lot of opportunities here for the students and this program.”
