Fall sports in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association will get off to their earliest start ever this year, beginning with the first day of practice in two sports Aug. 8.
Golf starts official practice and football begins the heat acclimatization portion of practice Aug. 8. Golfers are allowed to move into competition Aug. 11 and all sports have their first legal competition date before the month is over.
Field hockey, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball and girls tennis all begin practice Aug. 15, the same day football moves from heat acclimatization to full practices. Along with football, they have Aug. 20 as the first legal scrimmage date.
Girls tennis teams can begin competition Aug. 22 while the other sports wait until Aug. 26 for their openers.
The Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association has also set its league schedules for the various sports.
Lackawanna League golf play will start one day after the first legal playing date, with a full schedule on Aug. 12. The Bob Simons Classic Tournament for the league’s boys teams will be Aug. 15 at Elkview Country Club with the girls tournament set Aug. 22 at Elkview.
Girls tennis league play will begin on the first legal playing date, Aug. 22.
Football opens Aug. 26 with games that impact District 2 playoff races. Abington Heights will not have its first LFC Division 1 game until Sept. 23 and Lackawanna Trail will have its first LFC Division 3 game Sept. 30.
Girls volleyball and boys soccer begin league action Aug. 30.
Girls soccer begins in the Lackawanna League Aug. 31, but Division 1, in which Abington Heights competes, does not open until Sept. 8.
Cross country opens with boys and girls cluster meets Sept. 7.
Abington Heights and Lackawanna Trail compete in the Wyoming Valley Conference in field hockey where there is no Lackawanna League. Abington Heights is part of Division 2, which opens Sept. 6, and Lackawanna Trail is part of Division 1, which gets started Sept. 7.
