Cory Spangenberg produced his best monthly batting average of the season in August when he batted .288 in 22 games for the Memphis Redbirds.
The Abington Heights graduate made one defensive appearance at third base with the parent St. Louis Cardinals this year, but has otherwise spent the season with the Cardinals’ top farm team in the International League.
Spangenberg had five doubles, a triple, nine runs scored, four RBI, two walks and a stolen base during August.
Through Labor Day, Spangenberg was batting .234 on the season with 10 homers, 34 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He raised his season average from .220 to .235 during August.
Spangenberg has spent this season primarily playing third base, but also serving in a utility role, moving to other infield and outfield positions as needed.
The first-round pick of the San Diego Padres in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft has appeared in 420 career Major League Baseball games with the Padres, Milwaukee Brewers and Cardinals. He is a career .256 hitter with 29 home runs, 34 stolen bases, a .319 on-base percentage and .389 slugging percentage in the Major Leagues.
Memphis has lost four straight to drop to the .500 level at 64-64.
