District 2 of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has set plans for five of its fall sports championships.

Abington Heights, Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Prep are among the members of District 2, which is made up of schools from the Lackawanna Interscholastic Association (known, in many sports as the Lackawanna League) and Wyoming Valley Conference.

District 2 has made plans for determining its titles in golf, football, girls tennis, girls volleyball and field hockey. Abington Heights and Scranton Prep teams and individuals frequently contend for titles in golf and tennis. Scranton Prep and Lackawanna Trail often battle for district football championships and both won titles last season.

District 2 will conduct its team girls golf championships Sept. 28 at Elmhurst Country Club and the boys will be held Oct. 11 at Fox Hill Country Club.

The district individual golf championships will be Oct. 3 at Elkview Country Club.

In football, Lackawanna Trail and Old Forge are the district’s only two Class A teams and will meet for the title. The winner of the Nov. 5 game will play for the District 1-2 Class A Subregional title Nov. 12 or 13 against Jenkintown, Morrisville or Renaissance Academy Charter.

Abington Heights is one of six teams fighting for the four spots in the District 2 Class 5A playoffs to be conducted the same two weekends. Delaware Valley, Pittston Area, Scranton, West Scranton and Wyoming Valley West are the other Class 5A teams.

Similarly, Scranton Prep is one of six District 2 Class 3A teams trying to land in the four-team playoffs.

In girls tennis, where Abington Heights is in Class 3A and Scranton Prep is in Class 2A, the team championships are Oct. 5, 7 and 11.

The singles tournament is Oct. 13-14 and doubles is scheduled for Oct. 19-20 with Class 2A at Kirby Park and Class 3A at the nearby Wilkes University courts.

In girls volleyball, which uses four classifications, Abington Heights is Class 3A and Lackawanna Trail is Class A.

Abington Heights is one of 10 District 2 teams that will be joined by District 4 member Shamokin in trying to qualify for an eight-team tournament Oct. 27, oct. 31 and Nov. 3. If teams below eighth in the district’s power rankings formula are .500 or better, they can be added to the tournament for an Oct. 24 preliminary round.

Lackawanna Trail will be part of a five-team Class A tournament scheduled for Oct. 25, Oct. 29 and Nov. 2.

In field hockey, Abington Heights is in Class 2A and Lackawanna Trail is in Class A in the three-class format.

Abington Heights is one of eight teams that will all play in the District 2-4 Class 2A Subregional. It is scheduled for Oct. 25, Oct. 27 and Nov. 2.

Lackawanna Trail is one of seven District 2 Class A teams. That tournament is scheduled for Oct. 24, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2.
