KINGSTON – Susan Arp rallied from behind in the second set to pull out a close victory in an all-Abington Heights District 2 Class 3A girls tennis singles championship match.

Arp, the No. 1 singles player on a district championship team, beat the No. 2 player, Rina Hanumali, Oct. 18 on the indoor courts at the TK Tennis Academy. She won by scores of 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

“We’ve been practicing together all year,” Arp said. “I obviously have to play my best against her, but we’re still friends, so it’s hard.”

Arp used the win to advance to participate in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships at the Hershey Indoor Racquet Club Nov. 4-5.

The district singles tournament began outside at Kirby Park a day earlier after two previous weather delays. The second day was moved inside to complete the final two rounds.

Arp also needed a tiebreaker in her semifinal, a 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 victory over Crestwood’s Hannah Ziegler.

Hanumali got to the final with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Scranton’s Maia Philbin.

CLASS 2A SINGLES

Scranton Prep also had two players reach the singles semifinals.

Both were stopped by Wyoming Seminary sophomore Ilana Rosenthal, the tournament champion.

Rosenthal knocked out Leelah Farrell, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals and Alyssa Wigley, 6-1, 6-1, in the final.

Wigley beat Wyoming Seminary’s Victoria Martinez, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals.

CLASS 3A DOUBLES

Sisters Rina and Sona Hanumali made the finals before falling to Wallenpaupack’s Erika Badner-Frankie Toppi, 6-4, 7-5.

The Hanumali team rallied to defeat Crestwood’s Hannah Ziegler-Julia Glowacki, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), in a lengthy semifinal battle.

CLASS 2A DOUBLES

The Wyoming Seminary twin sisters team of Victoria and Anastasia Martinez topped the Scranton Prep team of Leelah Farrell-Emma Cuck, 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, for the title.

Farrell-Cuck downed Dani Konnick-Sophia DePolo from Dallas, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals.

The Martinez team beat two straight Scranton Prep opponents, getting past Annie Johnson-Gisele Falzone, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals.
