Abington Heights found every way possible to hurt Delaware Valley in the passing game.
The Comets produced five touchdowns on passes – four on their own attempts and one on a Pick Six – while pulling off a 38-13 road upset Oct. 28, denying the Warriors a share of the Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 title.
Delaware Valley had won the previous three LFC Division 1 titles outright and went into the regular-season finale poised to share the title with the Valley View-Scranton Prep winner.
Abington Heights had other ideas.
The Comets used three passers to compile 275 yards and four touchdowns. They had three players catch touchdown passes. When the Warriors tried to pass, the Comets had three interceptions, one of which Jack Burke returned for a touchdown, and came up with two sacks.
Mason Fedor, Shawn Theodore and Burke led the victory for the Comets.
Abington Heights secured a District 2 Class 5A semifinal playoff berth with the win and regained the Black and Blue Jug, the trophy that goes to the winner of the game between the two teams, for the first time in nine years. Delaware Valley had won the last seven meetings by a total of 252-39 and the teams did not meet in 2020 when Abington Heights sat out the season because of COVID.
Fedor caught eight passes for 122 yards and a touchdown and threw a 43-yard touchdown pass for the first score. Theodore went 13-for-21 for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Burke caught five passes for 81 yards, returned an interception 48 yards for a score and had one of the sacks.
Delaware Valley did throw for two touchdowns, including one to give the Warriors their only lead with 5:31 left in the first quarter.
Burke put the Comets ahead to stay before the quarter was over. He tied the game on the pass from Fedor off a trick play just 1:24 after the Warriors scored, then returned the interception for the lead.
Abington Heights opened some breathing room 39 seconds before halftime when Theodore found Bossi for a 23-yard touchdown to make it 21-7 at the half.
Michael Hartshorn’s 35-yard field goal with 4:02 left accounted for the only scoring of the third quarter.
Theodore found Fedor for touchdowns twice in the fourth quarter.
Nick Bradley also completed three of six passes in the win.
The ground game struggled, but Christian Henzes managed to pick up 53 yards on 15 carries.
Bossi caught three passes for 59 yards and led the defense with seven tackles and three assists.
Connor Casey had a sack and another tackle for a loss. He finished with six tackles and an assist.
Gavin Anders and Austin Boersma had the other interceptions.
Abington Heights, which was 0-4 before the start of divisional play, went 3-3 to finish tied for fourth out of seven teams. The Comets beat one team above them in the standings and Scranton, the team with which they were tied.
Valley View won the division at 5-1, Delaware Valley and Scranton Prep tied at 4-2, North Pocono went 2-4 and Wallenpaupack was 0-6.
