Lackawanna Trail graduate and Abington Heights assistant coach Christine (Basalyga) Zalewski was inducted into Bloomsburg University Athletic Hall of Fame for her performance in field hockey while the Huskies were positioned at the top of Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the sport.
Zalewski’s selection was announced in August and the induction ceremonies took place Oct. 23 in conjunction with Homecoming weekend at Bloomsburg.
After playing at Lackawanna Trail during a time when conference and District 12 championships were routine for the Lady Lions, Zalewski was a leader of similarly successful teams at Bloomsburg.
The Huskies went 21-0-2 and won the national championship in 1993, Basalyga’s sophomore season in which she was named second-team Division II All-American.
Basalyga was part of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships as a freshman and sophomore and Bloomsburg was 71-10-4 during her four-year career.
Along with being a first-team All-American each of her last two seasons, Basalyga served as team captain as a senior in 1995.
Zalewski played midfield, earning all-PSAC honors three times in a career that included nine goals and 10 assists.
Following college, Zalewski returned to Lackawanna Trail as an assistant coach and went on to serve as head coach at Delaware Valley High School.
