Mackenzie Schirg’s 33-point outburst during a 68-39 win at Blue Ridge Jan. 26 highlights a recent scoring surge by the Lackawanna Trail junior.
Lackawanna Trail wrapped up January with its second three-game winning streak of the season with Schirg’s offensive production leading the way.
The Lady Lions ended the month in second place in both sets of standings. They are 6-2 and tied for second with Mountain View in Lackawanna League Division 4 and their playoff rating leaves the Lady Lions second in the six-team seeding race in District 2 Class 2A.
Lackawanna Trail (9-7 overall) has positioned itself to open the playoffs at home.
Schirg is a big part of that success. In the last six games, she has scored at least 16 in every outing, starting with 27 against Elk Lake and including 25 against Susquehanna and 22 in a loss to Mountain View.
Gretchen Rejrat led the scoring in the last game of January, scoring 22 while Schirg added 18 in a 50-31 win at Forest City Jan. 30.
Rejrat had six in each of the first three quarters, helping Lackawanna Trail to a 32-8 halftime lead, then scoring the team’s only points of the third quarter.
The winning streak also includes 68-39 at Blue Ridge Jan. 26 and 52-36 over Susquehanna at home Jan. 24.
Schirg had 23 of Lackawanna Trail’s 47 points in the middle quarters again Blue Ridge, giving her 31 points through three quarters.
Nadia Toth and Schirg each had five points in the first quarter when the Lady Lions jumped out to a 16-2 lead against Susquehanna. Schirg had 15 of her 25 points in the second half.
During Schirg’s surge, in which she more than doubled her previous scoring output, Lackawanna Trail is 4-2 with the two losses coming by two and four points.
The Lady Lions have been starting strong.
They also held Forest City to two first-quarter points in the most recent game. In their first meeting Jan. 5, the Lady Lions shut out the Lady Foresters in the first quarter and built a 35-3 lead through three quarters of a 37-11 rout.
Montrose, the team the Lady Lions trail in both races, overpowered Lackawanna Trail, 51-6, Jan. 9, not allowing any points in the second or third quarters.
BOYS
The Lackawanna Trail boys remained winless on the season, losing their eight January games to fall to 0-16 overall.
The Lions allowed more than 80 points in three of their seven Lackawanna League Division 4 games. They matched their closest game of the season Jan. 26 at Mountain View in a 60-46 loss.
Jake Antolick continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging in double figures, including 21 points against division leader Forest City in an 84-38 loss and 18 against second-place Blue Ridge in an 81-36 loss.
