Abington Heights freshman Derek Williams captured the 50-yard freestyle title at the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional Swimming Championships, which were held March 3-4 at Wilkes-Barre Area High School.

Williams won by a half-second, finishing in 22.55 seconds.

Abington Heights finished third in the subregional with the second-best score by a District 2 team.

Delaware Valley won the title with 314 points while District 4’s Williamsport was second with 299. The Comets posted a total of 227.

Jason Casper was second in the 100 freestyle, Geoff Stanton was second in the 100 backstroke and they joined Williams and Jackson Wentz for a second-place finish in the closing 400 freestyle relay.

Casper, in the 100 freestyle, and Stanton, in the 200 individual medley, also had third-place finishes.

Stanton, Geoff Brock, Casper and Williams took third in the 200 medley relay.

Brock was fourth in the 200 freestyle and led off the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay team that also included Kenny Lynch, Wentz and Jack Shoemaker.

Williams was sixth in the 100 freestyle, Brock sixth in the 100 breaststroke and Lynch seventh in the 500 freestyle.

Class 3A girls

Gianna Vachino led the way for the Abington Heights girls, who placed fifth in the subregional.

Vachino was third in the 100 freestyle, fourth in the 100 butterfly and part of fifth-place finishes in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Phoebe Davidock was fifth in the 500 freestyle and anchored the 200 medley relay.

Audra Wimmer and Ella Bannon joined Davidock and Vachino on the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

The team of Susan Arp, Abby Kirtley, Ava Kochmer and Sunny Lynch took seventh in the 400 freestyle relay.

Williamsport beat out Delaware Valley, 325-213 for the team title. Abington Heights had 121 to finish in the top half of the 12-team field.

Class 2A

Alex Iannone won the 100 backstroke title for Scranton Prep in the District 2 Class 2A Championships.

Scranton Prep finished third in the boys team standings and second in girls.

Dallas won both team championships, beating out Scranton Prep, 283-238½, for the girls title.
