SCRANTON – Abington Heights basketball players Caroline Murray and Patrick Walsh each appeared in a pair of senior all-star games.

Murray joined Lauryn Notari in representing the Lady Comets in the Lackawanna League Senior All-Star Game March 28 at Scranton High and also played April 1 in the 570 Sports Show All-Star Game at Marywood University.

Walsh played in the boys games in the same doubleheaders.

Girls

Murray shared the game-high total of three steals and tied for second-leading scorer on the Red Team during a 46-44 loss to the Blue Team in the Lackawanna League game.

While going 3-for-9 overall, Murray made two 3-pointers to finish with eight points. She also had two rebounds and an assist.

Notari came off the bench and had one offensive rebound and one assist. She did not score.

Murray and Notari played on the Red Team, which was coached by Dunmore’s Carrie Toomey and had players from Holy Cross, Valley View, Mid Valley, Mountain View, Susquehanna and Elk Lake as well as Abington Heights and Dunmore.

Scranton Prep’s Gianna Cafarella and Rita Collins started on the winning Blue Team, which also had players from Scranton, Western Wayne, Wallenpaupack, Old Forge, Forest City and coach Todd Smith’s Montrose team.

Cafarella had seven points, four rebounds an assist and a steal.

Collins shared the team rebound lead of nine and had three assists and a blocked shot, but missed her only two shots.

Cafarella and Collins also joined Murray on the Lackawanna team, which lost to Luzerne, 86-79, in the game at Marywood.

Murray finished with four points, five rebounds and three assists while tying for the team lead in steals and blocked shots with two each.

Cafarella was the team Most Valuable Player and won the 3-Point Contest at halftime. She shot 7-for-15 on 3-pointers during the game to lead all scorers with 21 points.

Collins had 11 points and tied for leading rebounder with nine.

Boys

Walsh helped the Red Team, made up of Division 1 and 2 players, defeat the Blue Team, 122-111, in the Lackawanna League All-Star Game.

The Red had a 73-64 rebounding advantage with the help of Walsh’s 11, second only to West Scranton’s Tristan Lee with 13.

In a game where 24 players combined to take 137 attempts from behind the 3-point arc, Walsh was one of only two to make at least half his attempts. He went 3-for-9 from long rang while scoring nine points to go along with four assists and a steal.

Scranton Prep’s James Pettinato was also on the winning team, which was coached by Valley View’s Mike Kurpis. Pettinato finished with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Walsh hit four 3-pointers to account for his 12 points when Lackawanna rallied from a 20-point halftime deficit to defeat Luzerne, 144-142, in the game at Marywood.
