Abington Heights did not enter a large enough lineup to pursue any invitational titles in girls track and field during the regular season, but the Comets did produce several impressive results among its individual and relay entries.

The Comets could be a contender in the Jordan Relays, Robert Spagna Lackawanna Track Conference Championship Meet and District 2 Class 3A Meet, but coach Frank Passetti said his postseason lineup strategies will be based on advancing the most athletes possible to the state meet – and in the best possible positions – rather than prioritizing team titles.

“If it happens, great,” Passetti said, “but my first goal is where our best chances are for our athletes on the state level.”

Abington Heights sent two relay teams to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays April 28.

The Comets placed 136th out of 452 high school girls teams in the 1600 relay with a season-best time of 4:09.92 by the team of Emma Horsley, Maggie Coleman, Marygrace Sabatini and Kaylin Elliot.

“If you can run your best time at Penn Relays, it means you can go a lot faster, because it’s such a stressful environment,” Passetti said. “You can’t warm up before your races; you can’t use starting blocks.

“To run a 4:09 there, which is three seconds faster than last year when we had Gigi Sabatini on the team, our other girls have dropped. And, there’s not a senior on that relay.”

The 400 relay team was 235rd of 550 in the Penn Relays 400 relay in 52.01.
