Will McGrath finished with five goals and Scranton Prep broke away from a halftime tie May 17 when it defeated visiting Abington Heights, 14-5, in a District 2 Class 2A boys lacrosse quarterfinal.
The Comets ended their season 6-10 after losing for the seventh time in their final eight games, but they did not go down without a fight.
The game was tied, 2-2 after one quarter and 3-3 at halftime, before the Cavaliers scored seven of the eight third-quarter goals for a 10-4 lead.
Liam Barrett had four goals and three assists for the Cavaliers in the win. Brady Holmes added two goals and an assist.
Freshman Gavin Anders led Abington Heights with three goals and an assist.
Evan Davis added two goals while Austin Boersma had two assists and Wyatt Carper made 14 saves in the loss.
Anders led Abington Heights on the season with 36 goals and 49 points. Boersma led in assists with 16.
Nine of the 10 players who scored goals for the Comets this season were underclassmen, including two freshmen and four sophomores.
The Comets finished right in the middle of the Wyoming Valley Conference, placing seventh of 13 teams while finishing at 6-6 in the WVC.
Scranton Prep was fourth in the WVC with a 9-3 conference record.
The Cavaliers took a 14-4 overall record into the state tournament, which it qualified for by knocking out second-seeded Crestwood, 10-6, in the semifinals as the district’s third seed.
Holmes, who also had two assists, and McGrath scored three goals each against Crestwood. Aiden Jordan made 12 saves.
The Cavaliers went into the district final with 10 wins in their last 11 games prior to a 14-8 loss to WVC champion Wyoming Seminary in the district final.
Scranton Prep battled in the title game, staying within 8-7 going into the fourth quarter before Wyoming Seminary pulled away.
McGrath had three goals and an assist in the loss. Quinn Lynett and Holmes added two goals each. Jordan made 12 saves.
The Cavaliers were scheduled to play at District 1 champion West Chester Rustin when the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A tournament opened June 5.
