Abington Heights matched team champion West Scranton by claiming five individual titles Dec. 16 in the Lackawanna League Wrestling Tournament at Wallenpaupack.

The Invaders beat out the Comets 227½-207½ at the top of the standings in the 16-team race.

Austin Smith, Brian Heard and Caleb Marzolino each captured a title for the third straight year. Connor Beck and Mason Whitney won the other titles for the Comets.

Smith, who won 145-pound titles the last two seasons, pinned Western Wayne’s Tyler Barletta in 3:29 at 152 pounds.

Heard followed up titles at 138 and 160 the last two years by pinning Honesdale’s Joey Giannetti in 3:17 at 172.

Marzolino also went up in weight each season. The Indiana University commit pinned Wallenpaupack’s Xaiden Schock in 55 seconds at 215 to add to the 172- and 189-pound titles he won in 2021 and 2022.

Whitney also won by first-period pin. He defeated Delaware Valley’s Andrew Elliott in 1:41 at 121.

Beck had the toughest time in the final, winning at 107 on the ultimate tiebreaker, beating Blue Ridge’s Brice Woodruff 2-1.

Heard and Marzolino each went 4-0 on the day with three pins and a technical fall.

Whitney’s title was the result of winning twice by pin and twice by technical fall.

Smith also did not allow any opponents to go the distance, finishing 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall after receiving a first-round bye.

Beck reached the final with a 36-second pin and a 6-0 shutout.

Colin Price, at 160 pounds, and John Gorrick, at 285, each won decisions in the consolation finals to take third place. Keith Yusinski was fourth at 189.

The Comets finished 22 points in front of third-place Honesdale.

Lackawanna Trail was eighth with 81½ points and Scranton Prep was 11th with 45.

Brayden Clarke recovered from a semifinal loss to Whitney by winning consecutive decisions to take third place at 121, leading the way for Lackawanna Trail.

Garet Fowler was fifth at 145, while Joshua Fowler (114), Isaac Ryon (160) and Derek Kilmer (285) all took sixth.

Scranton Prep’s Max Shnipes pinned four opponents in a total of 5:12, including beating Scranton’s Javon James in 30 seconds, to take the title at 285 pounds.

Louis Paris was sixth at 215 for the Cavaliers.
