Lackawanna Trail fit in well with some of the country’s top high school field hockey teams Sept. 20-21, winning back-to-back games over out-of-state opposition during the MAXfieldhockey.com/Longstreth National Invitational Tournament.
The event drew teams from 12 states and produced a field that included 19 of the nation’s top 25 according to MAXfieldhockey.com rankings.
Lackawanna Trail topped Rancocas Valley Regional from New Jersey, 6-1, and Riverside from Virginia, 4-1.
Greta Krimmel had two goals in each game and also had assists in both.
Senior midfielder/defender Nora Evans, a Central Michigan University commit, was acknowledged by the hosting website as one of the top performers at the tournament.
Krimmel, who had two assists, and Emma Thomas, who had one, each scored twice against Rancocas Valley. Tea Burns and Evans had the other goals.
Megan Fahey and London Lisk scored against Riverside when Krimmel was leading the way with two goals and an assist.
Lackawanna Trail was 4-2 in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and tied for third with Lake-Lehman, trailing Wyoming Area and Crestwood, in the 11-team division going into games of Sept. 30. The Lady Lions were 6-2-1 overall for third in the seeding race for the eight-team District 2 Class A tournament.
Lackawanna Trail won four straight games by a total of 27-6 to begin September.
The invitational victories came in between losses to the top two teams in District 2 Class A.
The Lady Lions were shut out by Lake-Lehman, 3-0, Sept. 18 and by visiting Wyoming Area, 4-0, Sept. 25.
Lucia Campenni had a hat trick and assisted the other goal to lead Wyoming Area to a victory in a game between 2023 champions, who split their matchups a year ago.
The Lady Warriors held the Lady Lions without a shot on goal.
Wyoming Area was perfect in WVC Division 1, but Lackawanna Trail beat the Lady Warriors in overtime in the District 2 final on the way to an appearance in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class A championship game.
Thomas leads the team with 10 goals while Krimmel has a team-high eight assists.
ABINGTON HEIGHTS
After losing its first four games, Abington Heights has split its last six.
The Lady Comets are 1-5 in WVC Division 1 where they share the bottom spot in the standings with Delaware Valley. They are 3-7 overall to rank sixth out of nine teams trying to make the eight-team District 2 Class 4A Subregional playoffs.
All three Abington Heights wins have been by shutout.
The Lady Comets topped Northwest, 3-0, Sept. 14, then posted consecutive, 1-0 road wins over Wilkes-Barre Area and Wallenpaupack two days apart late in the month. The win over Wilkes-Barre Area was the first in league play.
