Abington Heights found both individual and team success in a home girls soccer game Sept. 25 against Valley View.
Lilia Calvert set a school record for career goals on the game-winner, which lifted Abington Heights to its most important victory of the season, 2-1, in a Lackawanna League Division 1 game.
The Cougars came into the game with an unbeaten record and the teams were tied 1-1 until Calvert scored off an assist from Allison Stanton.
The goal was the 89th for the junior, breaking the record of 88 set by 2003 graduate Megan Callahan when Abington Heights still played girls soccer in the spring.
Calvert’s goal also allowed the Comets to avenge their only loss of the season, extend their winning streak to seven and move into a tie for the division lead.
Entering an important game against Scranton Prep Oct. 1, Abington Heights was 6-1 in the division and tied with Valley View. Scranton Prep was third at 4-2-1.
Valley View (10-1) and Abington Heights (8-1) are also 1-2 in the playoff power ratings race for the top seed in the seven-team District 2 Class 3A playoffs.
Scranton Prep is 7-2-1 overall and second of 11 teams trying to work their way into the eight-team field in District 2 Class 2A.
Abington Heights posted three shutouts and outscored opponents, 27-4, in the winning streak which began with a 4-1, home-field victory over Scranton Prep Sept. 6.
Valley View had defeated Abington Heights two days earlier, 2-1.
Calvert, who has already committed to play National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I soccer at Rutgers University, set the school’s single-season record last year when she had 65 goals and helped the team take a perfect record into its first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championship game appearance. She had 14 goals as a freshman and has 10 goals through nine games this season.
Hawley Lynott scored earlier in the win over Valley View.
