Abington Heights posted two impressive victories and came up just short in two Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 losses during September.

The Comets entered October with a 1-2 LFC Division 1 record and a 3-3 overall mark. They led the race for the top seed in the four-team District 2 Class 5A playoffs, which could mean two home playoff games if they maintain that advantage.

The two division losses came to Valley View and Delaware Valley, the two teams tied for second place.

A look at the September games:

Delaware Valley 35, Abington Heights 28

Mike Iuzzolino carried 37 times for 227 yards and four touchdowns to lead Delaware Valley to a come-from-behind victory at Comets Stadium Sept. 28.

Abington Heights led 21-14 at halftime and went back in front 28-21 early in the fourth quarter.

Iuzzolino’s fourth score tied the game and Logan Olsommer ran 10 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds left.

The rally spoiled a big game for the Abington Heights passing attack.

Nick Bradley threw touchdown passes of 58 yards to Shane Brower then 69 and 6 yards to Shawn Theodore.

Thatcher Loss ran 39 yards for the touchdown that put the Comets ahead in the fourth quarter.

Bradley was 14-for-24 for 279 yards passing. Brower had seven catches for 137 yards a touchdown while Theodore had six for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

Abington Heights 21, North Pocono 3

Strong all-around performances by Gavin Anders and Bradley led Abington Heights to the LFC Division 1 victory Sept. 20 at North Pocono.

Anders caught six passes, including one for a touchdown. He blocked a punt that Anthony Severs ran in for a score. Anders also led the defense with six tackles and four assists.

Bradley went 17-for-21 passing for 174 yards. He ran and passed for scores and his only punt covered 50 yards.

Valley View 18, Abington Heights 13

Abington Heights led in the fourth quarter Sept. 13 at John Henzes/Veterans Memorial Stadium in Peckville before host Valley View pulled out the win on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Zach Cwalinski to Beyon McLean.

The Comets scored first on a 36-yard pass from Bradley to Brower. They went ahead 13-12 in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard pass from Bradley to Theodore.

Dom Vergnetti led the defense with eight tackles and two assists.

Abington Heights 30, Dallas 13

DALLAS TWP. — Nick Bradley used both his arms and legs to help Abington Heights take down host Dallas Sept. 6.

Bradley threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns and added two more scores running the ball.

Wideout Shawn Theodore caught five passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the win, providing a vertical threat as Bradley was able to stretch the field enough for a few big chunk plays.

Dallas led 7-0 late in the second quarter and had the Comets tied up 10-10 at the half, but the Mountaineers couldn’t find the rhythm after halftime, getting outscored 20-3 in the second half.

Abington Heights took the lead for good midway through the third quarter on what initially looked like a broken play. Bradley appeared to be looking for Theodore, who slipped and fell.

Bradley decided to tuck and run, and found some room for a 4-yard run to put the Comets up 17-10. He found Theodore for the second of their two touchdown connections early in the fourth quarter, and added one final rushing touchdown with two minutes left to put the icing on a big win for the Comets.

The Comets also got a big night on the ground from running back Dominic Vergnetti, who racked up 101 yards on 23 rushes.

“This was a complete team effort,” Abington Heights coach Joe Repshis said. “Anytime you come in here, you know it’s going to be a tough football game. We were able to make a few more plays and come out of here with a tough win.”
