Scranton Prep returns two starters and one of the state’s most prolific weapons off the bench from a team that got hot late in the season and advanced all the way to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 4A state boys basketball semifinals.

Leading scorer Brycen Martin is back, along with 6-foot-6 center Ambrose Rossi, who gives the team a physical inside presence.

Packy Doherty, who opened the state tournament with nine 3-pointers and a 40-point game, is likely to go from “playing starter minutes,” as coach Larry Reagan described it, to actually starting as he did at the beginning of last season.

Brody Martin will likely join his older brother and Doherty in the backcourt.

“That’s one of the things that I think is going to be a strength for us this year,” Reagan said. “The primary point guard is going to be Brody, but Brycen, Brody and Packy all have the ability to run our offense.”

Senior Jack Maloney brings another shooter and an offensive rebounding threat while likely filling the fifth starting spot.

“We have a number of guys who, if needed, could fill in that fifth spot,” Reagan said. “We will have a deep bench again and I think that is something that we can consider ourselves lucky that most years we can go nine to 11 guys deep.”

Senior Jake Skoff, twins Will and Christopher Ramey and 6-3 sophomores Max McGrath and Liam Haggerty provide that depth after the Cavaliers graduated seven seniors, all of whom played meaningful minutes.

“Last year, that was their story, it’s over,” Reagan said, summarizing his off-season message to this year’s team. “We’re not riding their coattails. They showed us a path. They showed us a way. We have to now go and try to improve upon that.

“Our goal ultimately is to try to win the last game of the season.”
