Scranton Prep came out of December with a 3-6 wrestling record, but most importantly for the Cavaliers, one of the wins came in the only Lackawanna League Division 3 match to date when the Cavaliers escaped on a tiebreaker after their Dec. 18 trip to Elk Lake ended tied at 36-36.
Jack Doughton’s pin in the closing bout at 172 allowed the Cavaliers to pull out the win.
Byron Axtell, at 285 pounds, and Roman Remedios, at 133, also won by pin.
Jake Barrett reached the finals of the Lackawanna League Tournament Dec. 21 and finished second at 139 pounds. The Cavaliers were 13th out of 16 teams.
Barrett leads the team with a 13-4 record and six pins.
Freshman 107-pounder Willow McDonnell is second on the team in wins. She is 7-5 with five pins after reaching the final at the Tony Iasello Christmas City Tournament in Bethlehem Dec. 28 and finishing second.
Scranton Prep placed seventh of nine teams at the event. Barrett took third at 133 while Jacob Kowalski (189) and Axtell (285) were fourth.
Scranton Prep’s other wins came when it went 2-3 in the Gary Woodruff Memorial Duals at Wyalusing Valley. The Cavaliers defeated Nanticoke 43-24 and Montrose 39-24.
