Lackawanna Trail has a winning overall record, but the Lions are quickly out of their usual spot contending for divisional wrestling honors in the Lackawanna League.
The Lions dropped their first two matches in Division 2 of the Lackawanna where the entire season consists of just five matches.
Lackawanna Trail lost at Valley View 41-35 Dec. 18 and at home against North Pocono 45-30 Jan. 2.
Through that Jan. 2 match, the Lions had four wrestlers in double figures in victories.
Senior Demitrius Douglas leads the way at 13-2 with 10 pins. Junior Isaac Ryon is 12-7 with a team-high 11 pins. Sophomore Matthew Shafer is 16-4 to lead the team in victories. Freshman Riley Borruso is 12-4.
The Lions lost to Valley View when they dropped four straight bouts from 139 to 160 to fall behind 35-12.
They moved in front of North Pocono three different times before losing five of the last six bouts, three of them by pin.
Tournament recaps
Lackawanna Trail finished eighth of 17 teams in the Frank Wadas Memorial Tournament, a two-day event in Tunkhannock during the holiday week.
Douglas won the title by pinning Benton’s Zachary Wolfe in 4:18 of the 189-pound final.
Shafer was second at 107, Borruso third at 114, Ryon fifth at 172 and Kaylis Douglas fifth at 215.
The Lions were led in the Lackawanna League Tournament by Matthew Shafer, who took third at 107 with a pin of Scranton’s Daniel Gonzalez at 2:41 of the consolation final.
Carson Ware and Isaac Ryon were sixth at 160 and 172.
Lackawanna Trail placed 12th of 16 in the team standings.
The Lions opened their season at the Battle of the Delaware at Delaware Valley where they finished sixth of eight teams.
Demitrius Douglas led the team, placing second at 189 pound.
Shafer (107) and Borruso (114) were third; Garet Fowler (152) was fourth; Brayden Jones (160) and Carson Ware (172) were fifth.
