Sona Hanumali won a three-set, all-Abington Heights championship match to claim the District 2 Class 3A title, but fell in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Tennis Singles Championship.
PIAA Class 3A
West Chester Henderson’s Erika Dunwoody ended Hanumali’s season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory Friday in the first round of the state Class 3A tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club.
District 2 Class 3A
Hanumali topped Abington Heights teammate Amishi Amit 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 for the district title Oct. 13 at the Birchwood Racquet Club.
Amit made the final as the No. 6 seed with the help of a rally to beat No. 3 Victoria Latek from Wallenpaupack 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. She then topped second-seeded Ella Swingle from Valley View 6-2, 6-3.
Hanumali dropped just one game each in the first round and quarterfinals. She then shut out fourth-seeded Katie Fahey from West Scranton 6-0, 6-0 before running into her first challenge in the final.
District 2 Class 2A
Montrose’s Cara Evans won the title by beating Scranton Prep’s two semifinalists in the last two rounds.
Evans, a runner-up to two-time state champion Ilana Rosenthal from Wyoming Seminary in each of her first two seasons, won in her third title shot, 6-1, 6-0, over Scranton Prep’s Lily Lengyel.
