Jason Casper and Derek Williams each won the maximum four events Jan. 29 when Abington Heights easily won one battle of unbeaten Lackawanna League boys swimming teams, setting up another.
Heading into the meet, three teams shared the league lead.
Abington Heights whittled that list to two with a 119-45 rout of Scranton Prep, setting up a first-place battle Feb. 4 at Abington Heights with Delaware Valley.
Delaware Valley and Abington Heights were set to enter the meet with 7-0 records, while Scranton Prep was 6-1.
Abington Heights won its first six meets by an average of more than 110 points.
The Cavaliers gave the Comets their closest league meet to date, but could not threaten Abington Heights’ perfect record.
Casper won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly. Williams won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. They joined forces on the 200 freestyle relay. Casper was also part of the 400 freestyle relay win and Williams swam a leg of the 200 medley relay victory.
In addition to their league success, the Comets won the Ernie Shartle Invitational at Tunkhannock with first-place finishes in five of seven events.
The highlight of that effort was the team of Geoff Stanton, Williams, Casper and Charlie Voytek completing the 200 medley relay in 1:39.07 to set a school record, the Tunkhannock pool record and the Shartle Invitational record.
The same four swimmers teamed up Feb. 1 to set a Classic Gold Relays event record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:44.48.
Scranton Prep standout Lukas Iannone, who had two individual wins in the loss to Abington Heights, broke a 29-year-old school record earlier in January with a time of 1:44.75 in the 200 freestyle. He broke Clint Cornell’s record of 1:45.89.
