MOOSIC — Abington Heights was the most-represented team on the Bombers for the Field of Dreams baseball game June 24 at PNC Field.
The Comets joined Mid Valley with four players each on the Bombers roster, and Abington Heights head coach Bill Zalewski also served as the team’s manager.
The Bombers fell to the Fightins 15-6 in the all-star game for recent graduates of Lackawanna League teams.
Nick Bradley, Evan Gonzalez, Reese Zalewski and Finn Goldberg were the Abington Heights players in the game.
Bradley, who started at third base, delivered an RBI single up the middle to pull the Bombers within 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. He also stole a base.
Gonzalez started at catcher and pitched effectively. He also reached on a walk.
The Bombers used nine pitchers for an inning each. Gonzalez was one of four to hold the Fightins scoreless. He worked the third inning and struck out two while walking one and not allowing a hit.
Reese Zalewski started at shortstop.
Goldberg subbed into the game in right field. He scored twice with an infield single in the eighth inning and by reaching base on an error when he led off the fourth inning.
Players from Dunmore, Elk Lake, Honesdale, Lakeland, Old Forge, West Scranton and Western Wayne completed the Bombers roster.
The Fightins featured players from Blue Ridge, Carbondale, Lackawanna Trail, Scranton Prep, North Pocono, Riverside, Scranton, Valley View and Wallenpaupack.
“There was an offensive explosion there,” said North Pocono coach Brian Jardine, who co-chairs the event, which Lackawanna County and the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau present to benefit the Bill Howerton Strike Out Cancer Initiative. “You never know what you’re going to get in one of these games because you have kids who probably haven’t played for a few weeks besides those who are in summer leagues, but we came out swinging the bases, running the bases, which makes it a lot of fun when you have an offensive game.”
