Two of District 2’s top girls volleyball teams got together for a non-league match to open the season Aug. 31.
Crestwood avenged a loss in last year’s District 2 Class 3A semifinals by pulling out close victories in the final two sets of the five-set match with visiting Abington Heights.
Abington Heights, coming off a perfect regular season in 2025, went up a set twice. It won the first set 25-20 and recovered from falling 25-21 in the second set to retake the lead with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Abington Heights actually scored more points in the match, but Crestwood got the timely points to win more sets, taking the fourth 25-22.
The fifth set went beyond the usual 15 points for Crestwood to get the necessary two-point advantage to win at 16-14.
“This match was an extreme nail-biter, one of the best ways to open up the season,” Abington Heights coach Morgan Bailleau said. “Despite it not being the outcome we had hoped for, with a new squad, this showed so much potential for the Lady Comets as we begin our season.”
Brielle Wentz had 11 kills, 20 digs and two aces in the loss.
Alaina Krempasky had a team-high 18 kills and 25 digs.
Saloni Kishore contributed 20 digs, six aces and three assists.
Hilde Temblador finished with five kills, two blocks, two aces and 14 assists.
Abington Heights won the Lackawanna League with a 15-0 record in 2025 and finished 22-1 with a loss to Berwick in the district championship match. It faces a more difficult schedule this season with two matches against each of the teams in a new Division 1 rather than one match against every team in the league, which has been split based on last season’s records.
Krempasky, Temblador and Wentz are all seniors who were prominent on last year’s championship team. Krempasky and Temblador finished 1-2 on the team in kills. Wentz led the team in assists and aces.
Kishore, a junior, saw some varsity playing time a year ago.
