Senior midfielders Allison Stanton and Bri Bustos are the only returning starters for the Abington Heights girls soccer, which lost 6-1 on the road at Northwestern Lehigh in its non-league season opener Aug. 31.
Stanton plays forward. She scored the only goal in the opener, giving her 100 career points.
Bustos plays on defense.
The Lady Comets have several other players returning from a squad that went 11-0-1 to win Lackawanna League Division 1 and 19-3-1 overall for a District 2 Class 3A championship on the way to the state quarterfinals where they lost 1-0 to Radnor. The graduation losses include state Player of the Year Lilia Calvert.
Among the returning players trying to fill spots in the lineup are senior midfielder/defenders Ella Musgrave and Jenna Schoenberg; junior midfielder/forwards Sara Barbrack, Morgan Davis, Bridie O’Malley and Erin Bartell; sophomore goalkeeper Sara Horsley; sophomore midfielder/forwards Brooklyn Yankow and Emma Watkins; and sophomore midfielder/defender Reese Azar.
“The girls are very eager and determined to show their abilities, teamwork, and sportsmanship on and off the field this season,” coach Meghan Noone said. “We have a lot of players stepping up and filling the roles needed to maximize our success.”
Newcomers who could contribute include: sophomore midfielder/forward Madelynn Calvert; freshman midfielder/forwards Mila Trently and Maddie Webster; freshman midfielder/defenders Caroline Peoples, Elena Mitchell; Evelyn Smith and Victoria Fendrock.
Sophia Schaffer, who reached 200 points for her career, and Kalynn Knauss scored twice each for Northwestern Lehigh in the opener.
The Lady Comets open their league schedule Sept. 9 at Scranton Prep. First, they were scheduled to take on Crestwood Sept. 2 in a rematch of the District 2 Class 3A final that they won 8-4.
