S. ABINGTON TWP. — Even though his team has had limited playing time outside due to weather issues, Abington Heights baseball coach Bill Zalewski likes what he’s seen in a few scrimmages.
“We’ve been hitting the ball very well,” Zalewski said. “Our defense has been coming along and our pitching has been better each time out. We’re trying to get a lot of guys some work.”
One of the pitchers Zalewski will count on is senior Nick Termini.
“He’s been one of the dominant pitchers in the area the last couple years,” Zalewski said. “We’re hoping he will do more of the same and lead our staff.”
Senior T.J. Lacey is expected to contribute as a pitcher and first baseman.
Junior James Myers is moving from catcher to shortstop.
Senior Andrew Myers has been working at first base.
Junior Jake Petty will likely start at second base.
Senior Hector Miranda-Santos, a transfer, is projected to be the starting catcher.
Junior Joey Barcia is expected to start in center field while sophomore Evan Dempsey will likely play left field.
Seniors Anthony Freda and Beck Chickillo have been working in right field.
Senior Ryan Burke and junior Nick Notari are competing for playing time at third base.
Zalewski expects North Pocono to be the top contender in Lackawanna League Division 2 play.
The Comets finished with a 6-6 league record last season.
Abington Heights is scheduled to travel to play Valley View in a Division 2-3 crossover game at 4:30 p.m. April 12.
