Abington Journal sports calendar for week of June 13, 2018

Abington Heights Athletic Physicals, 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 19 at the high school field house, 222 Noble Road, Clarks Summit. Physicals for the 2018-19 school year can only be accepted if dated after June 1, 2018. Cost: $15.

Countryside Community Church Fishing Derby, 9 a.m. to noon June 23 at the Abington Heights Middle School Pond, 1555 Newton Ransom Blvd., Clarks Summit. The event will be held rain or shine and will include prize drawings, face painting, archery, horseback rides, hot dogs and beverages, and a trophy for the child who catches the largest fish. Newton Recreation Center Golf Tournament, 12:30 p.m. shotgun start July 14 at Stonehedge Golf Course, 55 Stonehedge Dr., Tunkhannock. Cost: $90 per golfer (must have team of 4). Abington Junior Comets 25th annual Golf Tournament, July 16 at the Country Club of Scranton, 1001 Morgan Hwy., Clarks Summit. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. There will be a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner will follow the tournament. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the captain and crew format tournament. Entry fee: $150 per person, which includes lunch, golf, dinner and prizes. All proceeds benefit the Abington Junior Comets Football and Cheer Organization. Protect and Defend 5K Run/Walk, July 22 at Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton.Pre-registration cost: $25; $30 the day of the event. Register online at runsignup.com/protectdefend5k. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the race will start at 9:30 a.m. There will also be a Fun Run for children under age 12, led by Officer Wilding’s nine-year-old daughter, Lola, and additional children’s activities. Proceeds from the annual event benefit the Ptlm. John J. Wilding Memorial Scholarship Fund, which supports cadets at the Lackawanna College Police Academy. A pre-race day Happy Hour will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. July 20 at Backyard Alehouse on Linden Street in Scranton. Cost: $20, which includes a limited open bar and food. Proceeds will also benefit the scholarship fund. Those who register for the Run/Walk prior to or at the Happy Hour will receive a $5 discount on admission.
