CLARKS SUMMIT — A pair of players with extensive tournament experience and a pair of rising young stars won titles July 29 at the Scranton Tennis Club.
Joan MacDerment and John Weiss used accurate placement and consistent play to overcome their younger adversaries in the 55 and Over Singles events, while Robbie Azzarelli, former Holy Cross standout, and Phoebe Cykosky, current Wallenpaupack starter, took the Mixed A Doubles championship.
MacDerment, a nationally ranked singles player in her age group, defeated Aggie Izolt, 6-1, 6-1, in the Women’s 55 and Over Singles final, while Weiss, a frequent finalist in club events, withstood Doug Klamp’s forehand to win 6-2, 6-1 in the men’s event. Azzarelli and Cykosky rebounded from a nervous first set to surprise the top-seeded duo of Steve Lehan and Kathleen McKenna 4-6, 6-2, (10-3).
In semifinal action, MacDerment eliminated Denise Marcos, 6-2, 6-1, while Izolt ousted Connie Weiss, 6-3, 6-0. In the men’s semifinal, Klamp survived a stiff challenge from Dana Storms, winning 6-3, 7-5, while Weiss had an easier time defeating Tim Aikman, 6-2, 6-0.
In the Mixed Doubles semifinals, Lehan and McKenna survived a challenge from Joe and Diane Bailey, winning 6-7 (4), 6-2, (10-8). Azzarelli and Cykosky scored a convincing win over Zac and Ann Lehman, 6-1, 6-1.
In the battle of champions, speedy Bill Aubrey, recent B Singles champion in the Lackawanna County Open, outlasted Jerry Hahn 4-6, 6-1, (10-2) for the Men’s 55 and Over B Singles title. Jerry was the club B Division singles champion in 2017.
The Mixed B Doubles title went to Kyle Wind and Sidney Horvath, when they edged Frank and Holly Packer, 7-5, 6-2.
In the final match of the day, Doug Klamp and Angie Kluss won the Mixed A Doubles consolation title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over John Lucas and Jody Jackman.
John Weiss and Burt Reese were co-directors of the tournament.
On August 10-12, the club will be offering their club championship tournament with play in men’s and women’s singles and doubles in A and B Divisions.
