High school sports roundup: Abington Heights’ golf, girls tennis teams unbeaten

FOOTBALL

Comets fall in opener

Berwick (1-0) defeated Abington Heights (0-1), 42-0, in a non-league game Aug. 24. George Tinsley completed 16 of 27 passes for 152 yards with one interception for Abington Heights. Noah Braid led the Comets in rushing with 36 yards on 18 carries and Mike Malone hauled in five passes for 57 yards.

GOLF

Lions split with Eagles

Lackawanna Trail (0-0-1) split with Mountain View (0-0-1) in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 20. Andrew Kazmierczak and J.P. Gilroy earned individual wins for the Lions. Adam Jones earned a split for Trail. The teams of Kazmierczak-Jones and Gilroy-Nathan Wescott earned better-ball victories.

Spartans top Lions

Mid Valley (1-1-0) defeated Lackawanna Trail (0-1-1), 7-2, in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 22. J.P. Gilroy and Andrew Kazmierczak earned individual wins for the Lions.

Comets down Trojans

Abington Heights (2-0) defeated North Pocono (0-2), 6 1/2 – 2 1/2, in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 22. Will Brown, Daniel Flickinger, Troy Kelleher and Nick Sebastianelli won individual matches, and Andrew Kirtley earned a split for the Comets. The teams of Brown-Flickinger and T. Kelleher-Sebastianelli earned wins in better-ball play.

Flickinger made an eagle from 90 yards out on the third hole at Glen Oak County Club. He also had a birdie. Troy Kelleher made two birdies and shot one-under-par.

Comets blank Buckhorns

Abington Heights (3-0) defeated Wallenpaupack (2-1), 9-0, in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 23. Troy Kelleher, Connor Kelleher, Daniel Flickinger, Andrew Kirtley, Will Brown and Nick Sebastianelli won individual matches. The teams of T. Kelleher-C.Kelleher, Flickinger-Kirtley and Brown-Sebastianelli earned better-ball wins.

Troy Kelleher fired a two-under-par round that included four birdies to lead the Comets.

Lions sweep Foresters

Lackawanna Trail (1-1-1) defeated Forest City (0-3), 9-0, in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 24. J.P. Gilroy, Josh Rzucidlo, Andrew Kazmierczak, Adam Jones, Nathan Wescott and Luke Walker earned individual wins. The teams of Gilroy-Rzucidlo, Kazmierczak-Jones and Wescott-Walker won in better-ball play.

Comets too much for Hornets

Abington Heights (4-0) defeated Honesdale (3-1), 7 1/2 – 1 1/2, in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 27. Troy Kelleher, Connor Kelleher, Will Brown, and Nick Sebastianelli earned individual wins for the Comets. Andrew Kirtley earned a split. The teams of T. Kelleher-C. Kelleher, Flickinger-Brown, and Sebastianelli-Kirtley had better-ball wins.

Troy and Connor Kelleher posted a better-ball score of 31. Troy had an eagle on the second hole and Connor had two birdies.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lady Comets blank Lady Bucks

Abington Heights (2-0) defeated Dunmore (0-2), 5-0, in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 23. Bella Peters, Lauren Koczwara and Clare DellaValle earned singles wins for the Comets. The teams of Brooke Dennison-Holly Ross and Sidney Horvath-Isabel Holland won in doubles play.

Lady Comets hold off Lady Crusaders

Abington Heights (3-0) defeated Holy Cross (1-1), 3-2, in a Lackawanna League match Aug. 27. Bella Peters, Clare DellaValle and Lauren Koczwara had singles wins for the Lady Comets.
