Keller McGurrin captured two crowns in the 7th Annual Lackawanna County Open tennis tournament at the Scranton Tennis Club, defeating Eamon Gibbons 6-0, 6-1 in the Men’s A Singles event and pairing with his brother, Tim, to take the Men’s A Doubles title with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Steve Lehan and Curtis Althouse.
The Men’s A Singles semifinals featured two incredible comebacks, with McGurrin rebounding from a 2-5 deficit in the second set to knock out top-seeded Lenny Maiocco Jr. 6-3, 7-5 and Gibbons overcoming a 6-9 score in the third set tiebreaker to edge 3rd-seeded Dan Fowler 6-1, 3-6, (12-10).
In the Men’s A Doubles semifinal Lehan and Althouse edged Jack Lennox and Lenny Maiocco, Sr. 7-5, 6-2, while the McGurrins scored a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over John Lucas and Gary Rixner after overcoming a big scare in the quarterfinals. The brothers played three tiebreaking sets with Claude Briere and Dante Terenzio, winning 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (10-8), (10-3) in the most competitive match of the tournament.
Kelly Arp was the Women’s A Singles champion by defeating Gabby Chantiloupe 7-5, 6-2, while Kelli Cali took the Women’s B Singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Katrina Ricci. The semifinals were relatively straight forward, with the top-seeded Chantiloupe defeating Sofia Flores-Weidner 6-1, 6-1, and Arp knocking out 2nd-seeded Leelah Farrell, 6-2, 6-1 in a mild upset.
Denise Marcos and Connie Weiss captured their third Women’s A Doubles title in the Lackawanna County Open with a 6-3, 6-4 win over top-seeded Kathleen McKenna and Gabby Chantiloupe. The duo last won in 2016, and paired Marcos’ aggressive shot-making with Weiss’ consistent play to capture the title in a highly-contested final. In the semifinals Marcos and Weiss overcame a stiff challenge from CJ Grasso and Brianna Moraca, rebounding from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to win 6-4, 7-5. The top-seeded duo of McKenna and Chantiloupe were 6-1, 6-3 victors over Jody Jackman and Chris Lange.
