WILKES-BARRE — Third-seeded Abington Heights defeated second-seeded Williamsport, 4-1, in a District 2-4 Class 3A girls team tennis semifinal match Tuesday afternoon at Kirby Park.

“The girls were really sharp and persevered throughout the matches,” Abington Heights head coach Kelly Arp said.

The Lady Comets won each of the singles matches in straight sets.

Lauren Carroll defeated Katie Meale, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles; Clare DellaValle topped Mia Shuler, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles; and Lauren Koczwara ousted Kalindi Maggs, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.

“We had no idea what to expect because we don’t play them in the regular season,” Arp said. “They all had some tough games, but figured out what they had to do to win.”

Abington Heights’ No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Dennison/Holly Ross defeated Williamsport’s Taylor Shipman/Shara Brennan, 6-3, 6-1.

Williamsport picked up its lone win at No. 2 doubles when Madison Marchese and Desiree Aversa topped Savannah Blaum and Julia Poulson-Houser, 6-3, 6-3.
