Abington Heights moved a step closer to the Lackawanna League boys tennis title by not only remaining undefeated, but also knocking off another of its potential threats.

The Comets entered this week with the league’s only unbeaten record at 8-0 and victories over the next four teams in the standings of the 15-team league.

Abington Heights beat three of those four contenders in an eight-day stretch ending April 10.

After beating Valley View in a match between the last two unbeaten teams in the league, the Comets went out two days later and defeated Scranton Prep, 4-1.

Singles players Rory Harris and Sam Weis and the first doubles team of Chris Hobbie-Jake Rosenstein all won in straight sets in the April 10 match against the Cavaliers.

Harris defeated Matt Tressler, 6-4, 6-2, at first singles.

Weis topped Dan Zych, 6-4, 6-1, at third singles.

Hobbie-Rosenstein defeated Matt Tatulli-James Cavely, 6-1, 6-1.

Charlie Putska-Nadov Griver added a point at second doubles by defeating Nick Genco-Branden Braatz, 4-6, 6-2, 10-2.

Harrison Oven earned the only point for Scranton Prep by beating Varun Igoyar, 6-4, 6-0.

Abington Heights added a 4-1 win over Western Wayne Thursday.

Lenny Maiocco took No. 1 singles for the Wildcats.

Irogar, Weis and Hobbie-Rosenstein all rolled to straight-set wins.

Putska-Adam Vale were unopposed at second doubles.

Abington Heights also leads the ratings race over fellow unbeaten Williamsport for the top seed in the District 2-4 Class 3A team subregional.
