Dante DeRiggi and Hunter Riiff each scored three goals April 10 when Abington Heights posted the first conference victory in the history of its boys lacrosse program with a 6-2 win at Tunkhannock.

The Comets played non-league games only in 2017 and 2018 before joining the Wyoming Valley Conference this season.

Tunkhannock held leads of 1-0 after one quarter and 2-1 at halftime.

Abington Heights tied the game with a third-quarter goal and scored four more in the fourth to win going away.

Holdan Riiff held the Tigers scoreless in the second half and finished with eight saves.

DeRiggi and Jacob Naholnik had assists.

Sergey Montross had 16 saves for Tunkhannock (1-3).

The Comets are 1-2 after putting up competitive games against established opponents Wyoming Seminary (11-7) and Wyoming Area (11-6) in their first two league games.

Abington Heights was tied after one quarter and at halftime of its April 8 game at Wyoming Area, which won WVC division titles the past two seasons.

The Warriors took the lead with four goals in the third quarter and broke away with five more in the fourth.

Holdan Riiff made 19 saves.

Noah Johnson and Naholnik scored two goals each.

Dante DeRiggi had a goal and an assist. Ian Stevens scored the other goal.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Brennan Tates scored four goals and assisted on another Thursday when Abington Heights defeated host Pittston Area, 14-4, in a WVC game.

Morgan Stiles and Leia Parry added three goals and an assist.

Allison Murray scored twice and assisted on two goals.

Abbey Steenback and Lauren Kaczwara also had goals.

Sidney Horvath made seven saves.

The Lady Comets (2-3) have won two of their last three with the only loss in that stretch coming, 7-3, to Scranton Prep (4-1) April 9.

The three losses have come against teams with a combined 13-2 record.

BASEBALL

Lackawanna Trail is one of only two unbeaten teams in all of District 2.

The Lions lead the Lackawanna Division 4 standings and the District 2 Class 2A playoff seedings race with 4-0 records.

Lackawanna Trail defeated visiting Forest City, 5-2, April 8 and won, 18-3, at Montrose Thursday.

Abington Heights lost, 7-2, at the other unbeaten, Pittston Area, in a non-league game between District 2 Class 5A teams Saturday.

Dan Habeeb and Nick Notari each had two of the team’s four hits in the loss.

The Patriots improved to 8-0 overall.

Abington Heights is 3-1 in Lackawanna Division 1, tied for first place with Valley View.

TRACK AND FIELD

Lackawanna Trail swept Elk Lake April 10 in a Lackawanna Track Conference Division 4 meet, knocking off the four-time defending champion Lady Warriors, 83-67, in the girls meet.

The Lions also won the boys meet, 85-62.

Lackawanna Trail set up Wednesday’s home meet against Montrose. Both schools are 2-0 in both boys and girls for the only unbeaten records in Division 4.

SOFTBALL

Abington Heights improved to 4-0 in the Lackawanna League, where it leads Division 1, and 6-0 overall by winning three times in four days.

The Lady Comets won at West Scranton, 11-4, then defeated Western Wayne, 11-3, and Minersville, 5-2, in home games.
