Sam Weis and the doubles team of Charlie Puksta-Nadav Griver won matches in straight sets May 14 when Abington Heights defeated Delaware Valley, 3-1, at the Birchwood Racquet Club to capture the District 2 Class 3A team championship.

When Varun Iyengar pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over Peter Wilson at second singles, the Comets clinched the title.

The District 2 championship match was required after District 4 member Williamsport defeated Abington Heights in the final and Delaware Valley in the semifinal of the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional team tournament.

Weis downed Matt Lombardo, 6-4, 6-4, at third singles. Puksta-Griver defeated Jack Moriot-Max Plotkin, 6-4, 6-4, at second doubles.

Delaware Valley got its only point when subregional singles champion Tom Reese defeated Rory Harris, 6-0, 6-1, at first singles.

The Warriors led the first doubles match when it was halted with the team title decided.

Delaware Valley’s Tim Lloyd-Ryan Mrozinski won the first set, 6-4. Chris Hobbie-Jake Rosenstein came back to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (10-8). Lloyd-Mrozinski were ahead, 3-2, in the third set.

SUBREGIONAL DOUBLES

The Abington Heights team of Adam Vale and Rosenstein won three matches Wednesday at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre before being eliminated in Thursday’s semifinals of the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional doubles tournament at Wyoming Valley Indoor Tennis in Kingston.

Vale-Rosenstein lost just nine games in six sets Wednesday. They beat Brian Castrogiavanni-Eric Wolfe from North Pocono, 6-1, 6-0, third-seeded Ty Baker-Simon Wallace from Williamsport, 6-3, 6-3, and Adam Musto-Tom Dessoye from Pittston Area, 6-1, 6-2.

Eventual champions Harsh Patel-Mit Patel from Scranton beat Vale-Rosenstein, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals.

Weis-Puksta lost in their first match, falling to Wyoming Valley West’s Aidan Temple-Brendan Woods, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.
