The Abington American Legion baseball team struggled in its return from an 11-day, rain-induced layoff.
West Scranton took advantage of 10 unearned runs and nine walks Monday to defeat host Abington, 15-5, in a Pennsylvania District 11 League game.
Abington, which reached the midway point in its schedule in second place in the league at 5-3, had not allowed more than six runs in any previous game.
Jake Petty went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored in the loss.
West Scranton scored six times in the top of the second inning for a 7-1 lead, then added five more runs in the sixth inning for a 14-4 advantage.
Abington’s last previous on-field action had been June 12 in a 2-1 loss to unbeaten league leader Dickson City. Since then, it picked up a forfeit win over Tri-Boro and had two games postponed, leaving Abington with four games to make up.
