KINGSTON – Shaelyn Kobrynich from Abington Heights assisted on the go-ahead goal late in the first quarter and added a goal of her own in the fourth quarter Sunday when the West routed the East, 10-1, in the third annual District 2 Field Hockey Senior Classic at Wyoming Valley West’s Spartan Stadium.

Four players from Abington Heights and two from Lackawanna Trail were part of the winning team.

“I was just super excited to play with everybody in our conference because I play travel with a lot of the girls,” said Kobrynich, who played on the Luzerne County-based Electric Surge club team. “It was so nice to have a positive and fun atmosphere for your last high school field hockey game.

“ … Having a laid-back game and congratulating everyone on their seasons, I was just looking forward to a fun game.”

When Kobrynich assisted a goal for a 2-1 lead late in the first quarter, it was hard to know that the goal would serve as the game-winner.

“I just went down the right side of the field and crossed it to the top of the circle,” Kobrynich said.

Madison Pertl from Dallas was there to turn it into a goal.

After leading 3-1 at halftime, the West added three goals in the third quarter and four in the fourth.

Kobrynich’s goal with 7:35 left made it 8-1.

“It was a great lead pass to me in the circle and I just poked it in the goal,” said Kobrynich, who committed a year ago to play National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I field hockey at Wagner University.

Kobrynich was joined in the game by Abington Heights teammates Caroline Kelly, Erin Albright and goalie Makenna Thorpe.

They were teammates for the day with Lackawanna Trail’s Paige Hyde and Willow Burnell.

The West also included players from Wyoming Seminary, Wyoming Valley West, Lake-Lehman, Honesdale, Dallas and Berwick.

Wyoming Seminary, in Class A, and Wyoming Valley West, in Class 2A, had won Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state titles the day before at Whitehall.

Hannah Maxwell from Wyoming Seminary was named West Most Valuable Player after scoring two goals and assisting on three. Teammate Alex Wesneski scored the two goals after Kobrynich and finished with three.

Berwick head coach Amy Daniel and Lake-Lehman assistant Courtney Thomas coached the West.

The East was coached by Kayla Gronkowski from Nanticoke and included players from her team, Pittston Area, Hanover Area, Holy Redeemer, Delaware Valley, Wallenpaupack, Wilkes-Barre Area, Delaware Valley and Crestwood.

Caton Fahey from Holy Redeemer scored the East goal and was selected as the team’s MVP.

The game, organized by players Ali Tedik, a Hofstra University recruit from Wilkes-Barre Area, and Lauren Mullery, a Lock Haven recruit from Holy Redeemer, raised money for the American Heart Association.
