Both Abington Heights basketball teams put themselves in position to play for first place in Lackawanna League Division 1 against Scranton Prep on their final nights of regular-season play.
Both teams have a bye on the first playing date of the week and have just one game remaining.
The results of Scranton Prep-Valley View games to begin the week will determine in each case whether a potential first-place tie or an outright championship will be at stake in each of the games.
Scranton Prep went into those games one-half game ahead of Abington Heights in the girls race and one-half game behind in boys.
Abington Heights travels to Scranton Prep for the Wednesday girls finale against the Classics, who began this week as the only unbeaten team overall, boys or girls, in District 2.
Scranton Prep needed a rally in the final two minutes to win the first meeting, which was the team’s closest game of the season.
The Lady Comets have won seven straight since that game to reach 11-1 in the league and 18-3 overall.
The Abington Heights boys go into their home finale Thursday at 10-2 in the league and 15-6 overall with the help of their current six-game winning streak. The Comets have won 11 of the last 12 overall.
That stretch includes a 51-49 win at Scranton Prep Jan. 16 on a game-winning shot by Harry Johnson.
League playoffs, if necessary, will likely be conducted this weekend.
District 2 playoffs are set to begin Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Among the teams whose playoffs begin on that first night are the Abington Heights boys in Class 5A and the Lackawanna Trail girls in Class 2A.
